Sony today announced that the Reader Digital Book will be the first eBook reading device to support the EPUB format, the International Digital Publishing Forum’s XML-based format for reflowable digital books and publications. Starting next month, the Reader model PRS-505, will be able to access and accept secure and non-secure ebooks in the EPUB format. EPUB has gained acceptance among major trade book publishers, many of whom have committed to begin publishing forthcoming ebooks in the format. Additionally, the device will support Adobe eBooks with digital rights management and have the capability to reflow standard text-based PDF eBooks for improved flexibility and readability. Adobe has updated its popular Digital Editions software, a lightweight, rich Internet application for reading, acquiring and organizing digital books and other publications. Version 1.5 features enhanced DRM flexibility through named activation so that users can move content across platforms and mobile devices using an Adobe ID. In addition, ADE 1.5 is localized in French and German and has support for Mac® OSX 10.5 (Leopard).
Adobe Digital Editions supports both PDF and IDPF EPUB, a standard format designed to reflow for the screens of mobile reading devices, which has gained broad acceptance among book publishers. Today, at the IDPF conference “Digital Book 2008” in New York City, Sony publicly demonstrated EPUB, PDF, and Adobe’s DRM technology on a Reader Digital Book. The demonstration included transfer of content from Digital Editions 1.5 to the Sony device.
Adobe Digital Editions has over 1 million installations since the June 2007 launch. The new software will be automatically provided to users who have installed Digital Editions 1.0, and is available at the product site.
Adobe has also released an updated Digital Editions installer and launcher for distributors of eBooks. The installer is used to detect and install the latest version of ADE for retail or library customers of Adobe eBooks. The software is free to use and available with implementation instructions.

If you want to validate your EPUB files, run this Java-based tool. EpubCheck can detect many types of errors in EPUB, and checks OCF container structure, OPF and OPS mark-up, and internal reference consistency.
Use the Installer and Launcher SDK to detect if Digital Editions is installed, launch Digital Editions if already installed, and provision Digital Editions with a DRM fulfillment or with a content URL for direct download of unprotected PDF or EPUB content.
