If a file you'd like to convert to Adobe PDF using Create Adobe PDF Online is in an unsupported format, you can print the file to PostScript, and then submit the PostScript file to Create Adobe PDF Online. Before performing these tasks, you need to configure your system to create PostScript files.

Downloading the PostScript printer driver

To create a PostScript file, you must have a PostScript printer driver. You can download the Adobe Universal PostScript Windows Driver Installer from the Adobe website.

To download the Adobe Universal PostScript Windows Driver Installer:

1. Visit the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/support/downloads/ .
2. Click the Windows link in the Printer Drivers area.
3. Click the language version of the installer that you want to download (for example, Adobe Universal PostScript Windows Driver Installer 1.0.6 - English).
4. Review the system requirements and installation instructions.
5. Click Download.
6. Click Save This File to Disk, and then click OK.
7. In the Save As dialog box, specify a location (for example, the desktop) for the Winsteng.exe file, and then click Save.
   

Note: If you use a version of Windows earlier than Windows 98 SE, download and install the PostScript Printer Driver AdobePS 4.2.6 for Windows 95 and Windows 98 -- US English.

Downloading the Acrobat Distiller PPD file

To access more advanced printing options from your PostScript printer driver, such as color or custom page sizes, download the Adobe Distiller PPD file.

To download the Acrobat Distiller PPD file:

1. Visit the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/support/downloads/ .
2. Click Windows in the Printer Drivers area.
3. Scroll to the PPD Files section, and click PPD Files: Adobe.
4. Click Download.
5. Click Save This File to Disk, and then click OK.
6. From the Save In pop-up menu, choose a location (for example, the desktop) where you'd like to save the downloaded Adobe.zip file.
7. Click Save, and then click Close.
8. Double-click the downloaded Adobe.zip file to decompress it.
   

Note: You need a utility, such as WinZip, to decompress the file. For more information, see document 314490 , "Introduction to downloading files in Windows."

Installing the PostScript printer driver and creating a virtual printer

When you install the PostScript printer driver, you can create a virtual printer that will enable you to create PostScript files from any application:

To install the PostScript printer driver and create a virtual printer:

1. Double-click the downloaded Winsteng.exe file to start the Adobe PostScript Printer Driver setup program, and then click Next.
2. Click Accept to accept the End User License Agreement.
3. In the Printer Connection Type dialog box, select the Local Printer option, and then click Next.
4. Select FILE: Local Port in the Port Selection dialog box, and then click Next.
5. Click Browse in the Select Printer Model dialog box.
6. Navigate to the Acrobat Distiller PPD file you downloaded to your hard disk. Select Acrobat Distiller, and then click OK.
   Note: In addition to English, Adobe provides four additional localized Distiller PPD files for use when creating PostScript files that contain double-byte fonts: Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Japanese, and Korean.
7. Click Next.
8. In the Sharing dialog box select Not Shared, and then click Next.
9. Enter Create Adobe PDF in the Printer Name text box, select No for both options, and then Click Next.
10. Click Install.
11. Select No in the Printer Configuration dialog box, and then click Next.
12. Click Finish, and then restart the computer if prompted. A new printer icon appears in the list of printers.

Creating a PostScript file

After setting up a virtual printer, you can create PostScript files in many applications and submit those PostScript files to Create Adobe PDF Online for conversion to PDF.

To create a PostScript file:

1. In the source application, choose File > Print.
2. Choose Create Adobe PDF from the Printer pop-up menu.
3. Select Print to File, and then click OK.
4. In the Save As dialog box, choose a location for the PDF file from the Save In pop-up menu.
5. Enter a name for the PDF file, and then click Save.

Printing to the Create Adobe PDF Online printer

In addition to creating PostScript files to send to Create Adobe PDF Online, you can now print directly to the Create Adobe PDF Online printer (for Microsoft Windows users only.) Follow these steps to install and set up this printer driver:

1. Go to the Create Adobe PDF Online website athttp://createpdf.adobe.com/ and sign in with your Adobe ID.
2. On the right side of the main page, click the link to Add Create Adobe PDF Online To Your List Of Printers.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions to install and use the printer.

Note: For troubleshooting, the Create Adobe PDF Online printer driver is more viable than creating PostScript files.
