Photoshop Elements 6 crashes when you create or open a slide show (Windows)Products affected

Issue

When you try to create a slide show or open an existing slide show in Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 on Windows, the Organizer closes and Windows returns one of these error messages:

Before you begin

You must have administrator access on your computer to complete the tasks in this TechNote. If you are using Windows Vista, then the operating system may prompt you to enter the name and password of an administrator user account. If you are using Windows XP, then log into an administrator account on your computer before you begin.

Solutions

Do one or more of the following solutions. If you have InterVideo WinDVD installed, then start with Solution 1. If you have ever installed Pinnacle software on your computer, then start with Solution 2. Otherwise, start with Solution 3.

Solution 1: Remove InterVideo WinDVD.

To remove WinDVD on Windows Vista:

  1. Close all applications.
  2. Choose Start > Control Panel.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • If the Control Panel is in a Control Panel Home view, then click Uninstall A Program under Programs.
    • If the Control Panel is in Classic View, then double-click Programs And Features.
  4. In the list of installed programs, select InterVideo WinDVD, and then select Uninstall or Change.
  5. Follow the remaining on-screen instructions to complete the removal.
  6. Restart your computer.

To remove WinDVD on Windows XP:

  1. Close all applications.
  2. Choose Start > Control Panel (or Start > Settings > Control Panel).
  3. Double-click Add Or Remove Programs.
  4. In the list of installed programs, select InterVideo WinDVD, and then select Change or Remove.
  5. Follow the remaining on-screen instructions to complete the removal.
  6. Restart your computer.
Solution 2: Remove the Pinnacle audio codec.

  1. Close all applications.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • On Windows XP, choose Start > Run, and type regedit in the Open text box. Click OK.
    • On Windows Vista, choose Start, type regedit in the Search text box, and then press Enter.
  3. In the left-hand pane of the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{083863F1-70DE-11d0-BD40-00A0C911CE86}\Instance\
  4. Select the {37CE4089-FF16-47BE-83CC-91D283D06675} registry key, which appears as a folder.
  5. Choose File > Export.
  6. In the Export Registry File dialog box, select Selected Branch under Export Range, enter a name and location for the backup registry key, and then click Save.
  7. With the {37CE4089-FF16-47BE-83CC-91D283D06675} key still selected, choose Edit > Delete. Click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box.
  8. Close the Registry Editor.
  9. Restart your computer.
Solution 3: Update the graphics driver.

Solution 4: Refresh the CD, DVD, and Blu-ray Disc drivers list.

To refresh the CD, DVD, and Blu-ray Disc list on Windows Vista:

    • If the Control Panel is in Classic View, then double-click Programs And Features.
  4. In the list of installed programs, select Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0, and then click Uninstall.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Select Remove.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Follow the remaining on-screen instructions to complete the removal.
  9. Choose Start, type regedit in the Search text box, and then press Enter.
  10. In the left-hand pane of the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
  11. Select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry key, which appears as a folder.
  12. Choose File > Export.
  13. In the Export Registry File dialog box, select Selected Branch under Export Range, enter a name and location for the backup registry key, and then click Save.
  14. In the right-hand pane of the Registry Editor, select the LowerFilters value, then choose Edit > Delete. In the Confirm Value Delete dialog, select Yes.
  15. Select the UpperFilters value, then choose Edit > Delete. In the Confirm Value Delete dialog, select Yes.
  16. Close the Registry Editor.
  17. Choose Start, type devmgmt.msc in the Search text box, and then press Enter.
  18. In the Device Manager, click the plus (+) symbol to the left of DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
  19. Select the first drive listed in the DVD/CD-ROM Drives category, and then choose Action > Uninstall. If any drives are still listed in the DVD/CD-ROM Drives category, then repeat this step until the category itself is no longer listed in Device Manager.
  20. Restart your computer. Windows will automatically detect and reinstall the drives you removed in Step 12. You can verify that the drives have been installed by viewing them in Computer. If the drives are not listed, then open Device Manager (see Step 10) and choose Action > Scan For Hardware Changes.
  21. Do one of the following:
    • If you purchased boxed software, then insert your installation disc and follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
    • If you purchased your software as an electronic download from the Adobe Store, then log into your account at www.adobe.com/membership to download the installer. When the download completes, double-click on the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
  22. Restart your computer.

To refresh the CD and DVD drivers list on Windows XP:

  1. Close all applications.
  2. Choose Start > Control Panel (or Start > Settings > Control Panel).
  3. Double-click Add Or Remove Programs.
  4. In the list of installed programs, select Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0, and then click Change/Remove.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Select Remove.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Follow the remaining on-screen instructions to complete the removal.
  9. Choose Start > Run, and type regedit in the Open text box. Click OK.
  10. In the left-hand pane of the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
  11. Select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry key, which appears as a folder.
  12. Choose File > Export.
  13. In the Export Registry File dialog box, select Selected Branch under Export Range, enter a name and location for the backup registry key, and then click Save.
  14. In the right-hand pane of the Registry Editor, select the LowerFilters value, then choose Edit > Delete. In the Confirm Value Delete dialog, select Yes.
  15. Select the UpperFilters value, then choose Edit > Delete. In the Confirm Value Delete dialog, select Yes.
  16. Close the Registry Editor.
  17. Choose Start > Run, and type devmgmt.msc in the Open text box. Click OK.
  18. In the Device Manager, click the plus (+) symbol to the left of DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
  19. Select the first drive listed in the DVD/CD-ROM Drives category, and then choose Action > Uninstall. If any drives are still listed in the DVD/CD-ROM Drives category, then repeat this step until the category itself is no longer listed in Device Manager.
  20. Restart your computer. Windows will automatically detect and reinstall the drives you removed in Step 12. You can verify that the drives have been installed by viewing them in My Computer. If the drives are not listed, then open Device Manager (see Step 10) and choose Action > Scan For Hardware Changes.
  21. Do one of the following:

Solution 5: Troubleshoot installed codecs.

Additional Information

During its startup, the Slide Show Editor loads installed video and audio codecs, accesses the CD and DVD drives on your computer, and communicates with your graphics driver using Microsoft GDI+. If one or more of these items fails, then the Slide Show Editor may crash.
